Planting an April Pot

The winter blues may be a distant memory, but when it comes to spring’s diminutive bulbs, blue flowers abound. It’s surprising just how many plants there are that bear blue flowers during the cooler months, ranging from indigo, cobalt or sapphire shades through to ice, powder or midnight blue. Many are baby bulbs such as irises, crocuses, grape hyacinths, windflowers, scillas, squills, hyacinths and ipheion, all widely available at garden centres, ready planted in plastic pots that easily slot into larger container arrangements. This is gardening at its easiest, provided a few golden rules are followed. At the planning stage, check the eventual height and month of flowering of each plant, ensuring that taller varieties do not overshadow smaller ones.
