Plant Profile – Perennial Violas
It was a cool blue flower called ‘Icy But Spicy’ that sparked the love for violas shared by Laura and Jack Willgoss. ‘It’s the first one we ever bought — it’s very distinguished looking, and has a catchy name that reflects its colour and personality,’ they say. Inspired to collect more of these floriferous little plants, they soon had a burgeoning collection. ‘Violas offer an abundant flowering season, wonderful scent and such an array of flower colours, shapes and sizes, that trying to choose between them is like being a child in a sweet shop,’ believes Laura who met Jack whilst both were studying at RHS Wisley, dreaming of having a specialist nursery. Today, they run Wildegoose Nursery, and their viola collection runs to 150 different varieties.
