Killieser in Spring
This long, narrow London garden was a playground until Winkle Haworth’s children had outgrown it. With wall-to-wall lawn edged in skimpy borders of tough, childproof plants, the entire 28m x 8.5m plot could be seen at a glance from the house. Gradually, she dug up more and more of the lawn to make flower beds. ‘Although I went about revamping the garden in a rather unstructured way, I knew how to care for the plants. The tricky thing was visualising what it would look like in 10 years time.’ The turning points when she went on a garden history course which opened up a wealth of design possibilities that could be reproduced in miniature to suit the scale of her small space.
