Ordnance House in August

The layout revolves around a circular bed which not only provides a central focal point, but also forms an axis through which the main paths pass, linking different sections and separating areas of planting. The longest path forms a broad catmint walk that runs diagonally along the garden’s longest sight line, connecting a rustic gazebo at the easterly corner to a small circular patio and formal gravel parterre with stone, box and lavender balls. A shorter path connects the far side of the garden, with the house and a sunny terrace enclosed in lavender. The longer paths have been designed wider at one end, and narrower at the other — an old trick to exaggerate the perspective.
