Furzelea in April
A myriad of tulips fill every corner of the garden at Furzelea. Shimmering in the crystal clear light of a spring morning, they spill out of beds and borders, carefully colour-themed and blended with ornamental grasses, burgeoning perennials, unfurling foliage and shrubs. From a raised stone terrace outside the kitchen, there are tantalising glimpses of a pergola, arches, part of a thatched roof, shapely trees and meandering beds and borders. ‘I wanted a garden that you couldn’t see all in a glance, with hidden areas that would entice us outside, however bad the weather,’ explains Avril, a retired home economics teacher. First impressions are of an orchestrated informality, and there is some truth in this.
