Woodbines Avenue Garden in August

Measuring just 22 metres by 8 metres, the plot is cleverly laid out to incorporate different ‘zones’ that seamlessly merge one into another. The common thread is provided by a winding path which runs the length of the garden, linking two terraces — a shady area paved in York stone immediately adjacent to the kitchen, and a raised sunny area at the furthest end of the garden. Between the two terraces, broad borders stretch out on each side of the path to create depth, variety, texture and interest throughout the garden. The borders also add height, a vital ingredient that partially veils each zone on approach along the path, gradually parting to reveal the full picture, before drawing together again ahead of the next zone.
