The Crest Garden in June

It takes imagination and gardening know-how to turn antiquated cast-offs into plant containers. In this sunny 25m x 20m garden, there's an animal feeder turned herb planter, a thyme-filled enamel pedal bin, a birdcage of violas, kitchen scales filled with gravel and succulents, wooden crates of broad beans and an agricultural cart planted with vegetables. As the containers have amassed, the garden has gradually evolved, not from any prescribed design, but to accommodate a succession of love affair plants bought by its owner. And, once there was not more space to fill, then more lawn was sacrificed as the curving free-form beds were enlarged once again. As a result, there are two long side borders filled with roses, alliums and herbaceous perennials.
