St Mary’s Walk in Autumn

When Rosemary Coldstream told her two young daughters that she’d make a jungle for them to play in, she was as good as her word. ‘We created a ‘jungle walk’ through a densely planted border, so the children have secret spaces to explore and hide,’ says Rosemary. Hers is a garden of surprises, not only because it has hidden corners, but also in being deceptively bigger than its actual size which measures just 30m x 15m. Its spaciousness is partly due to a design which centres on a calm oval of green lawn, edged in big, bold plants. Using large plants in a compact space may appear counterintuitive, but the drama of big, strong shapes and king-sized leaves conveys an uncluttered, roomy feel.
