Sibella Road in April

Chance is no stranger to gardens, so when the Great Storm knocked a lilac through the garden wall of Judith Strong’s 18m x 7m walled plot, she was unfazed by the devastation. ‘The garden was pretty uninspiring, so I saw this as an opportunity to do something,’ she says. After clearing the mess, she resurfaced the patio, widened the frustratingly narrow borders, and decided on a diamond-shaped lawn until chance stepped in once again with a surprise visit from a gardening friend. ‘She spent all of ten seconds considering my diamond idea, and muttered the magical word ‘octagon’. Once the octagonal-shaped lawn was in place, the overall layout fell into place — four roughly triangular beds grouped around the lawn, each with a specific colour theme.
