Sandhill Farmhouse in Spring

A beautiful view is a joy in every season, whether dusted in frost, shimmering with midsummer haze, or wreathed in the soft mists of spring. This country garden is set against a lovely borrowed landscape of hills and valleys, fields and woodland beneath a wide, open sky. A seventeenth century farmhouse has, unusually, front and back gardens with very different identities. The front has an area of woodland, forming a leafy canopy above retiring shade-lovers, whilst to the left, steps ascend to a sun-baked terrace where Mediterranean plants thrive. A stone arch frames a first glimpse of the back garden — a small summerhouse for watching the sun go down, beds of peonies and lavender, buckthorn columns and a yew hedge, set against a backdrop of undulating countryside.
