Holt Organic Farm in Spring

Gardeners come from the most unexpected walks of life, so when Sarah Mead exchanged the footlights of the West End for the afterglow of the setting sun as it sinks behind the hills surrounding Holt Farm, she had little inkling of the lovely garden she would create. ‘I grew up in London where I trained as a dancer, so I arrived at a country garden with absolutely no gardening knowledge whatsoever,’ she recalls. Learning through experience and visiting other gardens, Sarah gradually increased the size of hers to more than six acres. Wedged between the Mendip Hills and Blagdon Lake, the garden benefits hugely from borrowed views in every direction. One of the first things she did was to open up the views to the lake on the northerly side.
