Ben’s Acre Garden

The front garden of Brian and Pauline Clark’s 1970s home gives no clue that anything out-of-the-ordinary might lie behind, but visitors are always  surprised when they emerge from the side passage to see the back garden for the first time. They are greeted by a hillside plot with retaining walls that terrace the hillside into four distinct areas — a pond; a level courtyard with interlinking circles overlooked by a stone seat and arbour; herbaceous and rose beds around lawn; and, at the very top, a summerhouse, pond and rockery. ‘It was a blank canvas, and was created bit by bit, with lots of pauses and thinking before going onto the next area,’ says Pauline, its owner. ‘I’d never have come up with all the ideas in one go – it had to evolve.’
