Alexandra Drive in June

It's amazing how a dull, flat rectangular back garden, seen in a blink of an eye from the house, can be transformed into a series of interconnected outdoor rooms. A decade ago, the plot was laid entirely to lawn from fence to fence, apart from a tumbledown greenhouse and two willows. Since, the owner has gradually filled the 46m x 8m suburban plot with different areas that unfold one after another in a beautifully integrated design. However, there was no masterplan, nor was it an 'instant' garden laid out in a weekend, evolving gradually. The first area to be completed, born of necessity rather than by design, was a workshop built halfway down the garden, and the long pergola soon followed.
