Abbeywood Gardens in August

Whether swathed in silver mist or bathed in golden light, there is a serene loveliness about Abbeywood Gardens, with its pools, parterres and prized plants. There’s a newly planted arboretum, a kitchen garden and the walled Exotic Garden, a spectacular collection of tender and rare plants. Enclosed on three sides by a glasshouse and walls, on the fourth a hedge parts to make space for a gazebo that frames snapshots of the Pool Garden beyond. Here, a long central channel is flanked by a parterre whilst at the west end, two huge urns hold sway over grasses. Beyond lies a pergola walk and herbaceous borders set against lanky pines and the distant hills.
