Little Orchard in July

Nic's design unfolds as a series of linked, eye-catching cameos that create lovely views when framed by the cottage's kitchen or sitting room windows. 'We look out on the courtyard all year round, so it's important to have something worth looking at,' notes Nic. It was in 2011 that he first saw the Edwardian cottage, and was immediately won over by the old wall. 'That's what sold me the house — I'd always wanted a walled garden.' However, the house was painted white which proved stark when the weather was gloomy. 'And if it was sunny, you needed your sun glasses, so we painted it a soft, muted grey — an ideal backdrop to planting.'
