Kitchen Garden Styles

There is something irresistibly appealing about an old-fashioned kitchen garden, with its well-ordered rows of vegetables vying with soft fruits, flowers and herbs. It harks back to a time before freezers, food processing and the fast-food frenzy when produce was fresh and flavoursome. Today, home-grown fruit and vegetables are firmly back on the menu, with a great increase in the number of kitchen gardens, in a wide variety of styles, forms and sizes. The only constraints are imagination and limitations of the site such as space, aspect and soil type. An open, sunny site is essential, but if space is at a premium, then vegetables can be grown in containers, or alongside flowers, fruit and herbs.
