Designing an Intimate Retreat

A garden is so much more than somewhere to grow plants, and means many things to different people. However, whether used as playroom, place of work, hobbies centre, storage facility, al fresco eatery or creative outlet, it is outside in the fresh air. There is now an increasing awareness of the therapeutic benefits of being out in the open, not only arising from the calming influence that comes from a sense of space, but also from the sustaining power of nature. For some, being in their own green hideaway is enough, whilst others enjoy exploring sensory aspects — smell, sight, sound and touch — or the simple act of getting their hands dirty, a feeling of connection with the soil.
